MY STORY
MY FAMILY
Photos have always been a huge part of our family tradition. My parents captured loads of photos when we were growing up and because they made the effort to print them I treasure being able to look through all of our albums.
When I was 15 years old I learnt how to develop film and print photos in a makeshift darkroom with my cousins on the island of Mauritius where we lived before moving to Australia as a teenager with my parents.
Although I have embraced digital technology, I’m certain it was my experience with film that gave me an added appreciation for the preservation of one’s family history through the printed photograph.
MY JOURNEY WITH PHOTOGRAPHY
I first started photographing with film cameras in 1978. I used to borrow my dad’s 35mm rangefinder Ricoh. The last film camera I owned was a Hasselblad 500CM similar to the ones used by NASA for the Apollo moon missions. Yes really, the first camera on the moon! It was a mechanical camera, no batteries, so you really had to understand light and exposure to take good pictures. Unlike digital cameras there was no checking the screen to see if you had the shot. This is a picture of me in 2002 with the film slider from that same camera in my hand while my partner photographed me in a remote part of New Zealand’s South Island.
I took this iconic camera with me on several holidays, the shutter used to make a loud thud when activated and then you had to wind the film mechanically to get ready to take the next frame. It certainly drew attention from onlookers!
Soon after this I was working as a photographer for a leading family photography studio fully equipped with the latest digital equipment. I undertook new studies in the digital realm and upskilled. It was my extensive experience in electronics combined with my passion to capture images that helped me embrace the full potential digital photography technology had to offer.
In November of 2007 Image Technique Photography was born. Using the latest digital equipment I realised my dream of creating lasting memories for people, through photos, “Capturing Moments That Tell Your Story”
